Alternative Action

The 43rd World Series of Poker kicks off at the Rio in a week. This one’s gonna be interesting, as participation will provide an important gauge as to what’s going on in the poker world one year after Black Friday (and probably less than a year before the online game is legalized, in one form or another). It’s a long tournament—it runs until mid-July—and I’ll get into what’s really good about this greatest of all gambling events in an upcoming column. Here I want to discuss how you can get the big-tournament experience for less. Read more »

A short guide to daylife

It’s been half a decade since Las Vegas pools began turning into nightclubs. Or day clubs, rather. There have been some false starts (remember the stripper pool at the Rio?), but all in all, daylife has made it over the hump. But how important is it really that DJ-this is playing here and Resident-that is playing there? Well, sure it’s important—but none of it means much unless you know your pools first. Most of the questions I get about pools fall into three categories: Which ones are topless, which ones have blackjack, and which ones can I get into if I’m not a hotel guest? Read more »

Free Money, Free Food, and Tacos in a Biker Bar

First, a few casinos launched $100-rebate-on-loss deals to stir up business. Then the Trop did ’em one better with a $200 offer. A couple of months later, the Palms upped the ante to $500. Now the Riviera is offering a $1,000 rebate on losses via the just announced “Grand Guarantee.” Under this deal, players can gamble on video poker or slots, lose up to $1,000 and get it all back. Diggin’ The D

The name comes from the downtown location, the name of the new owner, Derek Stevens; and Stevens’ hometown—Detroit. But it could also stand for Deal, because there are some good things going on—or I should say, still going on—down there. Read more »

Bloody Good

Where’s the best Bloody Mary in Vegas? With hundreds of places to choose from, that’s a tough question to answer. Price, bar ambience and individual tastes all come into play—anyone for a bacon Bloody at the Double Down? I’ve certainly had some good ones at big price points in Las Vegas’ finer restaurants, but for me it always comes back to the deal. Read more »

Things continue to change for the better downtown, with the latest improvement being the switch from Fitzgeralds to The D. With the name change will come lots of upgrades, and already in place is the cool Longbar on the first floor. Read more »

The Best of All Time

When I started the Las Vegas Advisor back in the ’80s, casino dining specials were the primary hook, and over the years the LVA has chronicled thousands of them. Here are a few of the best of all time. Read more »

Show tickets cost less ... sort of

How much does it cost on average to see a Las Vegas show? Every year I add up the numbers and do that calculation for the April issue of the Las Vegas Advisor, and almost every year the average goes up. But this year is an exception: the average price is “just” $75.44 down $1.02. That’s good, right? Read more »

Cheap Wine

Keeping in the spirit of Vegas Seven’s wine issue, let’s take a look at a few of Las Vegas’ many deals on the grape. The sheer number of restaurants and bars and nightclubs in this town lead to all sorts of plays on wine all over town. The biggest problem is staying up with them. Here’s a list of some the top deals going on right now. Read more »

Madness is here

The Super Bowl is the biggest day of the year in Las Vegas sportsbooks, but it’s not the biggest event. The biggest event is the March Madness basketball tournament, which kicks off its three-week run this weekend. Read more »
